What is a BEST Course?

BEST gives students the opportunity to travel and develop both their technical and interpersonal skills through academic seminars organized throughout the year in various cities in Europe. Through BEST Courses, students can meet new people, gain international experience, enrich their CV and have fun.

In how many BEST Courses can someone apply?

Each student can apply to up to 3 BEST Courses per season, but is only accepted to one, depending on the order in which they are registered. Also, throughout one’s student life, one can participate in up to 3 Courses, and only 2 of them can be in a Summer Season.

BEST Course in Spring

BEST Thessaloniki in the spring season, organizes a multi-day academic seminar in an international environment. Through the seminar, students have the opportunity to develop their skills, get to know different cultures and new people, but most of all have fun. The seminar encourages diversity and helps European STEM students to acquire an international mindset. Participants are at least 22 students from technology institutions all over Europe, as well as 10 undergraduate students from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Participants attend lectures by university faculty or professionals in the field and at the end they are assessed and receive a certificate of attendance with European recognition. Through these seminars, STEM students are given the opportunity to broaden their horizons in technological issues as engineers, to acquire new knowledge, but also the experience of working in a multicultural environment.

2. European BEST Engineering Competition (EBEC)

EBEC is the largest engineering competition in Europe and offers students the opportunity to use their knowledge and skills to succeed in one of the two categories of the competition, Team Design or Case Study.

The competition includes the following categories:

Innovative Design

This category was held for the first time at EBEC Greece in 2023 in place of the Team Design category, where contestants are invited to study the theoretical construction of an innovative device either to solve an unsolved business problem or to improve an existing one. The economic, social, environmental and technical impacts of their creation are taken into account and then presented in device form to a jury composed of professors and/or corporate representatives.

Case Study

In this category, competitors are required to analyze and solve a theoretical business problem by developing hypothetical solutions using the information provided at the start of the competition. To determine the winner, a presentation and evaluation of the results follows to professors relevant to the subject matter and to the topic team.

EBEC Greece

The winning teams from the Greek local rounds continue to the second phase of the competition, EBEC Greece, where they compete in the Innovative Design and Case Study categories. Their ultimate goal is to qualify for the final European round among the best to win the title “BEST Engineers of Europe”!

Innovative Design

This category was held for the first time at EBEC Greece in 2023 in place of the Team Design category, where contestants are invited to study the theoretical construction of an innovative device either to solve an unsolved business problem or to improve an existing one. Case Study

An established category of the competition, which aims to solve a theoretical scenario or a management problem based on data provided to the contestants. Each solution will be presented to a jury composed of professors and/or corporate representatives. Emphasis will be placed on finding creative proposals for solving the problem, without regard to its practical application.

3. BEST Soft Skills Track (BSST)

BEST Soft Skills Track (BSST) is a series of sessions delivered by representatives of companies and other experts on interpersonal skills (Soft Skills), such as time and project management, leadership etc. In each session, a specific skill is introduced, and students become familiar with its practical applications, both in the workplace and in their everyday life. In addition, students have the opportunity to get in touch with the professionals after the seminar, discuss with them and network.

4. Local Event on Education (LEoE)

Local Events on Education is a one-day seminar organized by BEST Thessaloniki, in which students, professors and professional engineers discuss about topics on education in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. BEST Thessaloniki together with our university chooses the topic and it gives students the chance to take part in discussions about the improvement of our educational system. The future engineers can ask questions and all together they can find solutions for improvement points on the educational system. The whole process is important because through this every aspect of the problem is analyzed by people with different backgrounds and experiences.

5. Seminars Intracom

Intracom Telecom is an international provider of telecommunications systems and solutions with over 45 years of presence in the market. BEST Thessaloniki organised, this year, in collaboration with Intracom Telecom, the Workshop “Software development: Cloud native”.

The subject of the seminar is Software Development. More specifically, reference was made to individual sections such as Cloud native application development, Design Patterns in S/W Development, Building a service and Microservice implementation, execution & deployment.

6. Company Seminars & TITAN-BEST Safety Workshop

BEST Thessaloniki, apart from the activities that it organizes every year in cooperation with various companies – sponsors, organizes seminars and workshops on various topics. Through these events, students have the opportunity to learn more about a specific topic, to practice some technical skills, but also to get in touch with the representatives and companies.

One of these events, is organized by BEST Thessaloniki in cooperation with TITAN Group every year since 2012. It consists of a track of two-day seminars on “Health and Safety at Work”. Usually, 6 workshops are held in 3 tracks. Each workshop includes a visit and tour of the TITAN plant, attendance of various lectures, participation in a case study and discussion to draw useful conclusions. At the end, official certificates of attendance are issued by the TITAN Group.

Priority is given to older students and a variety of faculties is desirable. Students at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki who were participants in previous years, but who did not attend a cycle, also have the opportunity to participate in the two-day workshop, so that they can receive the final certificate of attendance. Transportation to and from the factory is free of charge with buses starting from the entrance of the Polytechnic.
